Dear Parent of a Neurodivergent Child

PRACTICAL SUPPORT · FAMILY SYSTEMS · REAL-LIFE TOOLS

Parenting a neurodivergent child can leave you searching for answers to questions that rarely have simple answers: Is my child unable to begin the task, unwilling to do it, overwhelmed by it, or avoiding the discomfort associated with it? When should I provide support, and when does support become accommodation? How do I encourage independence without withdrawing the structure my child still needs?

Dear Parent of a Neurodivergent Child delivers evidence-informed psychological education and practical strategies for parents raising children, teenagers, and young adults with ADHD, OCD, anxiety, executive-function challenges, emotional dysregulation, sensory sensitivities, perfectionism, and related neurodivergent experiences.

WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE

Each edition takes one meaningful parenting challenge and breaks it down through an ADHD-, OCD-, and family-systems-informed lens. Rather than merely naming the behavior, Stephanie explains what may be happening psychologically, neurologically, developmentally, and relationally and what parents can do next.

Depending on the topic, each newsletter may include:

• A clear explanation of the psychological or neurological concept being discussed
• Concrete examples showing how the pattern appears in everyday family life
• A Bowen Family Systems analysis of how anxiety and behavior move through the family
• Practical strategies parents can begin using at home
• Specific language and scripts for difficult conversations
• Reflection questions that help parents examine their own responses
• Tools for building executive functioning, emotional regulation, accountability, and independence
• Guidance for reducing overfunctioning, rescuing, accommodation, and repeated power struggles
• Nutrition, hydration, sleep, movement, and integrative mental-health considerations when relevant
• Recommended podcast episodes, supplemental listening, articles, and additional resources
• A realistic next step so parents know where to begin

Topics may include morning routines, school avoidance, homework, motivation, dopamine-seeking behavior, gaming and screen use, sleep, food and hydration, emotional meltdowns, rejection sensitivity, perfectionism, masking, friendships, substance use, household responsibilities, employment, college, and the transition into adulthood.

The purpose is not to give parents another list of everything they are supposedly doing wrong. It is to help them understand the function of a behavior, identify the family pattern surrounding it, and respond with greater clarity, steadiness, and intention.
